Hazelwood fire disaster - We demand action!

Dear Premier,

I am deeply disappointed by the government's handling of the Hazelwood mine fire disaster. In order to redress this situation, as a matter of urgency, I call on you to:

  1. Create a comprehensive Disaster Relief Fund, which includes: respite accommodation for all residents requesting it; a professional clean up of all houses and buildings affected by coal ash; compensation for all loss of earnings of businesses and individuals; compensation for all health-related and veterinary expenses incurred; compensation for relocation expenses and other expenses incurred as a result of coping with the disaster; additional funding for schools, hospitals, and public services that have strained by dealing with this disaster.
  2. Direct the Chief Health Officer, Dr Rosemary Lester, to commission an independent expert to examine and report publicly on the short term health impacts on Latrobe Valley residents including any increases in hospital presentations and mortality, and identify if there are any likely medium to long-term health risks to residents. If risks are identified, then make recommendations to the Victorian Health Minister regarding any short-comings of the public health system in the Latrobe Valley and the actions required to readdress these issues. The report containing the recommendations must also be tabled in Victorian Parliament. Undertake a baseline health survey and continuing long term health study to ascertain any long term effects.

  3. Amend the terms of reference for the Judicial Inquiry to ensure that the inquiry must: accept public submissions; determine whether the regulations are sufficient to prevent future fires; and report all findings publicly.

Yours Sincerely,

We would like it in black and white that all public submissions be accepted into the Inquiry…..anything less would be a further affront to the people of the Valley!

As a family with 2 yr old twins, we weren’t able to leave as requested as we received no assistance as we don’t have healthcare cards, and as casuals, if we didn’t work we didn’t get paid! Now our house should be properly cleaned too, and not at our expenses!

Each residence should receive a pain and suffering pay for damages and loss from this event regardless of future lawsuits and each home cleaned by professionals – we should not be left to clean this mess on our own. GDF must be accountable for the negligence against not having measures in place to protect the community at large and the government must also be accountable for monitoring and negligence of letting GDF continue after failing numerous safety checks and regulative conditions and contracts concerning the safety and well being of our community. The government has put so much money into hazelwood when it should have been going to local green and renwables creating jobs for our community. The EPA must also take major action filing a major claim and fine for the 6-7 weeks of constant poisons and toxic pollution residents have been exposed and subjected to, and YOU, the health minister and Tony Abbot must be made accountable for not taking emergency action to call in the army and authorities to evacuate town in the first 2 weeks… This has been a major Australian disaster that has barely seen the light of day (quite literally) on any media source (maybe due to their financial backers) and a total failure in response to the protection, health and safety of it’s people, and in this day and age I am outraged beyond belief – UnAustralian

volunteers and cfa should be accorded the same protection for their services.
