Hazelwood fire disaster - We demand action!

Dear Premier,

I am deeply disappointed by the government's handling of the Hazelwood mine fire disaster. In order to redress this situation, as a matter of urgency, I call on you to:

  1. Create a comprehensive Disaster Relief Fund, which includes: respite accommodation for all residents requesting it; a professional clean up of all houses and buildings affected by coal ash; compensation for all loss of earnings of businesses and individuals; compensation for all health-related and veterinary expenses incurred; compensation for relocation expenses and other expenses incurred as a result of coping with the disaster; additional funding for schools, hospitals, and public services that have strained by dealing with this disaster.
  2. Direct the Chief Health Officer, Dr Rosemary Lester, to commission an independent expert to examine and report publicly on the short term health impacts on Latrobe Valley residents including any increases in hospital presentations and mortality, and identify if there are any likely medium to long-term health risks to residents. If risks are identified, then make recommendations to the Victorian Health Minister regarding any short-comings of the public health system in the Latrobe Valley and the actions required to readdress these issues. The report containing the recommendations must also be tabled in Victorian Parliament. Undertake a baseline health survey and continuing long term health study to ascertain any long term effects.

  3. Amend the terms of reference for the Judicial Inquiry to ensure that the inquiry must: accept public submissions; determine whether the regulations are sufficient to prevent future fires; and report all findings publicly.

Yours Sincerely,

Speechless. The gall of the people we elect to try and hide truths, to keep those in power who should be supporting us. What a nightmare. A bucket? We HAVE our own bucket, how preposterous and down right embarrassing! Our council and state government are laughable. This is a serious issue and you have continued to play politics. Your people have no respect for any of you.

We have been sick, and our animals have been sick. An immediate health study needs to be done to determine how widespread the impact is, and a long term study done to monitor the increased rate of health decline of those affected. It isn’t just the 13,000 in Morwell, it is at least the 75,000 in the Latrobe Valley and possibly further that are affected. The Health Departments statement that there are no new health problems, only aggravation of previously undiagnosed health problems should not absolve them of responsibility for further action and investigation. People who had no symptoms, who began showing symptoms during the incident are victims of the incident, regardless of whether there was a predisposition to it or not.

I will incur a $500.00 excess payment and loose my 10% no claim bonus on my insurance just to clean my roof cavity and heating ducts.. This is a direct result from the Hazelwood mine fire damage. I could only relocate a short time and had my cat at a cattery for 3 weeks for his protection from the ash he was ingesting. The distress and financial loss in value to my newly renovated home has caused personal issues. The embarrassing bucket gift is offensive in its inadequacy. I feel ALL the residents of Morwell deserve the truth at the very least. I was born in the Morwell hospital and my 92 year old mother still lives in the family home which is now the only reason I remain in this polluted town. History shows the hard time the residents of Morwell have endured and this last poor treatment of its residents will only break the spirits of those like myself.
