Save the Gippsland Line

Dear Daniel Andrews,

We the citizens and people of Gippsland do not agree with the recommendation that regional train services be terminated at Pakenham and our vulnerable, disabled and elderly be forced to change trains on their journey to Melbourne. Many of these people are the disadvantaged of our community, often seeking medical assistance & appointments in metropolitan medical centres that are not available in our region.

This change would also affect the bike tourists and young families who would also have difficulty with young children, prams and bikes changing trains to and from crowded metropolitan rail. The Gippsland area is being promoted as a great tourist region with economic benefits and as a way of overcoming the demise of the coal and timber mill industry and continual rail service is a must for this to succeed.

Other frequent users of the system are our people who work in the metropolitan centres and choose to live in the regional and rural areas here for the lifestyle and community opportunities that we have. The current system is unreliable and often runs late, this additional transfer and changeover time will add to the already overly long trip and decrease the reliability of the transport system to them, not to mention the additional time needed to be added to the start of the trip, getting up earlier, the changes in timetables that will be required etc.

We understand that the cost of upgrading the metropolitan system is a burden, but can Gippsland at least have the same standard as the other Victorian regions, that our Melbourne trains actually go to Melbourne, as they now do.

The Federal Minister for Infrastructure who is a resident here has promised his support in working with the state government to help sort the congestion problem.

We ask that you do not accept this part of the report from the citizens jury on face value and seek further consultation with the impacted communities and federal counterparts as you work towards an upgrading of the lines to at least the standard that the other Victorian Regions rail systems already have.

A Melbourne train should go to Melbourne, why does the Gippsland regional line get substandard service recommended? http://www.votv.org.au/gippsland_line?recruiter_id=3512

How city-centric would this decision be?!?! We in the country are unfortunately becoming accustomed to being second class citizens. Shame.

Considering that the population spread out towards and into Gippsland has been possible because people can commute using the existing rail system, surely it would be extremely detrimental to reduce the service. Improving it would be beneficial to every community on the route!

This is ridiculous. Obviously the people suggesting the change have easy access to transport.

I frequently travel on trains for night football alone as a female. If I had to change trains at Pakenham and wait on an unpatrolled station for a vline service connection I would be unable to go to the football via train anymore.

V/Line trains are travelling long distances – adding time and additional connections that may be missed into the service isn’t right and shouldn’t happen.

The service on the Gippsland line is atrocious in any event frequently late or cancelled, fix the line but don’t take our train service away.

My children love the train but in the future if trains are taken away children will never get the privilege to have that train ride . LEAVE THE TRAINS ALONE !!!

Please we need this service. It is the only affordable way to get country kids to Melbourne for school excursions . It is bad enough they have to travel 8 hours in one day to experience places like the NGV or the zoo etc, but then to make them change services – that is ridiculous adding time and stress to their day .

Come on… What about giving the country kids a fair go!

I use these services with my family several times a year to travel from Bairnsdale to Melbourne to visit with friends and family. I cannot drive so the services are essential to me and my family. Please do not remove our Train services.

We have an aging population and the train is the only way for the aged and infirmed to get to Melbourne.
